The course is made up of three sub-courses relating to different themes. In the first sub-course the subject of Economic History is introduced. The main issues are the agricultural transformation, international market integration, and international movement of labour, goods, and capital. The second sub-course explores the long-term trends in income distribution within and between countries, taking account of conditions such as population density, land distribution, institutions, etc. The final sub-course investigates the emergence and development of the international monetary and financial system, from the metal currency standards of the 19th century to the contemporary, heterogeneous system.
